2
You actually performed the work under that condition (write down date, time, location, job order and hours).
3
Note what protective equipment was provided and whether it fully removed the hazard.

ENVIRONMENTAL PAY · ELIGIBILITY GUIDE
Am I Eligible for Environmental Pay?
Environmental pay (sometimes called environmental differential, EDP, dirty pay, hazard pay or height pay) is paid for work performed under covered unusual or hazardous conditions. The NNSY–TVFEMTC Collective Bargaining Agreement is the controlling source for this guide. Always match your situation to the exact wording of the CBA's environmental pay provisions.
What Should I Know? · Covered Categories
Dirty / Contaminated Work
Work in conditions that soil the body or clothing beyond normal shop conditions. Check whether your task matches a dirty-work category listed in the CBA.
Heights / Physical Hazard
Work at heights or near physical hazards where protective devices may not fully remove the risk. Confirm the condition is a covered category in the CBA.
Toxic / Chemical / Asbestos Exposure
Work involving exposure to toxic materials, chemicals or airborne fibers. Note the material, location and duration, and compare it to the CBA's listed conditions.
Temperature Extremes / Confined Spaces
Work in extreme heat, cold or tight, enclosed spaces. Coverage depends on whether the CBA lists the condition — do not assume it does.
What Happened?
- You performed work in a listed hazard or hardship and were not notified, determined eligible, or paid an environmental differential.
- You worked in a dirty, hot, cold, high, noisy or hazardous area and were not paid environmental differential.
- Your timecard was not coded for the exposure.
- Management says the job or area does not qualify.
What Should I Know?
- The CBA’s Environmental Differential article (Article 13) controls how claims are raised at NNSY.
- Pay depends on the actual work and conditions — not just your job title.
- Article 13 Section 2 lists the categories and rates below. The CBA says the list is a guide and not all-inclusive.
- Unpaid environmental pay can be disputed through the Negotiated Grievance Procedure.
What Should I Do Now?
- If the supervisor knows the assignment qualifies, you are notified at assignment. If you were not notified and believe the condition qualifies, bring it to the supervisor as soon as possible.
- Write down the date, shop, location, job order, task and exact conditions/exposure.
- Note hours exposed and any PPE or controls used; keep pay records and witness names.
- Ask your supervisor for the pay to be coded and keep the answer in writing.
- Contact your steward before any time limit runs out.
âš Important Deadlines / Time Limits
- A dispute under the negotiated grievance procedure is ordinarily initiated within 15 workdays (Article 33).
- Do not wait for your next paycheck to act — check the Grievances guide and the original CBA for the exact limits.
Forms / Documents
- Your notes on dates, hours, location and conditions
- Assignments, timecards / leave and earnings statements, exposure and pay records
- Job orders, work instructions or tags for the area
- The supervisor's determination and any supervisor replies
- PPE information
- Witness names
Who Should I Contact?
- Your TVFEMTC shop steward — first stop.
- Your immediate supervisor — to request the pay determination. The immediate or next-level supervisor determines and advises the employee.
- TVFEMTC — if your steward is unavailable or the claim is denied.
Escalation Steps: Pay-Dispute Process
- Ask your supervisor for a pay determination.
- The immediate or next-level supervisor determines and advises you.
- If denied or ignored, bring your records to your steward.
- Your steward may file a grievance under the negotiated grievance procedure — ordinarily initiated within 15 workdays under Article 33. See the Grievances guide.
- Unresolved grievances move through the steps in the CBA.
What Happens Next?
- Management reviews the work and conditions.
- If the claim is approved, pay is corrected.
- If it is denied, your steward and TVFEMTC decide on next steps under the grievance procedure.
- If management questions you about it, see the Representation guide.
